TREBLE WINNERS

The 26th of May 1999 saw Manchester United take on Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League Final, with the match taking place at the Nou Camp in Barcelona.

Mario Basler gave Bayern Munich a much deserved lead, a lead that Bayern held right up until the 91st minute when Teddy Sheringham equalised! The game looked set for extra time until Sheringham knocked it down for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to tap home and create history, a truly iconic moment!

Manchester United completed a historic treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League, as a result, Corinthian were asked to produce a special pack to commemorate this achievement. Corinthian released the Manchester United Treble Winners Celebration Pack in July 1999, with the pack containing 17 squad players and manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Corinthian did not disclose how many packs were produced, however each one did come issued with a certificate of authenticity, which was hand signed by Jaap Stam. In addition to the team pack, Corinthian were also asked to produce a set of single blisters packs, all 18 were done with just 1,200 of each blister being produced, with all stock going to collector centres.

The entire starting 11 were included, which was Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Jaap Stam, Ronny Johnsen, Dennis Irwin, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, David Beckham, Jesper Blomqvist, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole, along with manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Super Subs Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were included, as was Phil Neville who was an unused substitute in the final.

 

 

Paul Scholes and Roy Keane missed the final due to suspension, with Keane picking up his ban with a battling performance in Turin against Juventus to drag United to the final. Henning Berg was injured which meant his compatriot Ronny Johnsen would take his place along side Dutch defender Jaap Stam.

 

 

It has to be mentioned that the promotional images used for the pack, along with the images on the collector cards for Beckham and Keane do not actually match the released figure. The images used were of the very first Headliners sculpt, however the figure Corinthian used was the second sculpt produced for both players.

 

 

The Corinthian ProStars Manchester United Treble Winners Celebration Pack came with 18 collector cards and an Old Trafford display stand.

 

 

A vastly popular pack and one which has always retained it's value, with the single blister packs at times proving elusive, given how just 1,200 of each were produced.
