WORLD GREATS SET J

In February 2003 Corinthian launched the 2003 version of the Corinthian Collectors Club, with the membership packages containing exclusive product which was not available in any retail store, and it was not possible to purchase the World Greats from Corinthian direct either, they were only available as part of the membership package.

As was the case with the membership packages in the previous 3 years, there were 3 different levels of membership which were Silver, Gold and Platinum, with different figures available in each level of membership.

There are 4 Club Gold World Greats figures which were included in the Silver membership and made up Set J.

The 4 figures included are all relatively modern day players, which was a definitive shift from previous Club Gold World Greats which saw the figures included being more legends of the game.

 

 

I personally felt this change did not work and it was quickly realised that a larger percentage of collectors, certainly those who joined at a higher membership level, were from an older age demographic, so would prefer the legends of yesteryear to a modern day player. The membership package for 2004 would resort back to the legends as the figures included in the membership.

Collectors who joined at Silver level would receive Roberto Baggio in Brescia home kit, Roberto Carlos in the away kit of Brazil, Rio Ferdinand in Manchester United away kit and in Sweden away kit is  Frederik Ljungberg. All were sculpts which had been previously released, however there was something interesting in relation to the Ljungberg figure.

There was some confusion over what kit he was going to be released in, with the initial application poster depicting him in a White and Yellow away kit, not the dark blue kit he would eventually be released in. The collector card that accompanied the figure was actually the unreleased White and Yellow kit version, and it was not until the Summer of 2020 that it was realised that in fact both versions of the collector card exist! I have included images of both cards here.

 

 

All 4 were released in a Club Gold World Greats window box, on a Gold base and coming with collector card
