LEGENDS OF THE 70'S & 80'S
SERIES 2

Corinthian wasted no time in released ProStars Legends of the 70's & 80's Series 2, with the series coming out on the 20th of October 2003, just 3 months after series 1 had been released.

Legends of the 70's & 80's Series 2 features 16 figures, with a heavy billing of players in club kits from Italy Serie A teams, such was their popularity and demand at the time, especially from collectors in Japan.

This was the first standard release of Diego Maradona, the only previous versions were in the Club Gold range, however this was an all new sculpt and would also be used for the 2003 Christmas special. This figure of Maradona has him in his iconic Napoli kit, Corinthian knew demand would be great and produced a total of 14,055 blister packs. This figure is still very much in demand with the Platinum Pack high coveted by collectors, not just because it is Maradona, but because it is the only Maradona Platinum that Corinthian ever released.

A very famous Dutch trio can be found in this set, all wearing the away kit of AC Milan, those 3 are of course Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard, with all the sculpts first featuring in the World Club Legends Series in Milan home kit. Production wise there are 9,147 Gullit, 8,757 Van Basten and 8,661 Rijkaard, despite these large numbers they have appreciated in value, such was the demand and interest in the set.

Juventus also had a trio of figures released, with Paolo Rossi and Zbigniew Boniek in home kit and Michel Platini in away kit. This was the first regular ProStars release of Rossi, having first featured in the Club Gold World Greats range, and would also feature in the Juventus Legends box set, with Corinthian making 4,665 blisters of Rossi.

Platini had of course been released a few times already but this was the first time in Juventus away kit, with 9,237 made. Zbigniew Boniek was a new sculpt and would be released in Poland home kit as part of the Collector Club Special Edition Series shortly after, with this Juventus home kit version having 3,393 blisters made.

There are 2 more in Serie A club kits, which are Falcao and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Falcao was released in Roma home kit, having 4,395 blisters produced, roughly half the number of the figure of him in Brazil home kit from Legends of the 70's & 80's Series 1. Rummenigge was a brand new sculpt, with Corinthian producing 6,483 blisters, the only other release of Rummenigge would be in West Germany home kit as part of the Collector Club Special Edition Series.

The only national kit figure in this series was Terry Butcher in England home kit, a nice and easy repaint for Corinthian, with Butcher of course featuring in Legends of the 70's & 80's Series 1 for Rangers, this England version had 2,391 released, which was the 2nd fewest in the series. The figure produced in the lowest volume was Charlie Nicholas in Arsenal home kit, having just 2,383 blisters made, with Champagne Charlie appearing in series 1 for Celtic.

Last but certainly not least are the 5 Liverpool figures, all in home kit, which are Kenny Dalglish, Terry McDermott, Kevin Keegan, Graeme Souness and goal keeper Bruce Grobbelaar. Keegan was the same sculpt as we saw released in ProStars Series 3, this Liverpool version had 3,043 blisters made. Kenny Dalglish got his very first regular Prostars release, in face this would prove to be the only standard blister release of the Scot, with 2,953 blisters produced.

Corinthian made just 2,779 of Souness, who we first saw in Legends of the 70's & 80's Series 1 for Rangers. This was the second release of McDermott, who was first released at the 2003 Convention on the 31st of May in England home kit as part of the Collectors Edition Series, with this Liverpool version having 2,743 made.

Last up is my personal favourite from this series, the eccentric  Zimbabwean Bruce Grobbelaar. We first saw Grobbelaar as a Corinthian as part of the FAPL Collection for Southampton, this Liverpool version was of course an all new sculpt and would be the only standard blister release of Grobbelaar, the only other release of him would be as part of the Liverpool Legends Box Set. Corinthian made 2,761 Grobbelaar blister packs.

Given how well Liverpool product sold all over the world, it seems rather surprising to see such low production volumes, with the most being Keegan with 3,043. As a result these can be relatively hard to find in today's market, with the Platinum Packs being highly sought after.

The figures were released as single blister packs and came with an individually numbered collector card. Platinum Packs were also produced, with each one being limited to just 360 pieces, coming with a generic non issue numbered collector card.
